Early Saturday morning violence disrupted Virginia State University just days before classes were set to begin. Five people suffered gunshot wounds outside campus residence halls near the Quad Annexes.
The incident triggered an immediate campus lockdown around 1:30 a.m. Law enforcement agencies, including campus police and the Chesterfield County Police Department, rushed to the scene. The lockdown remained in effect until roughly 9 a.m., when officials lifted the restrictions while keeping a heavy security presence on site.
The Investigation and Multiple Suspects
Investigators are actively searching for multiple shooters. According to Lt. James R. Lamb of the Chesterfield County Police Department's Criminal Investigations Major Crimes Unit, the incident was not a random drive-by shooting.
Authorities have confirmed that out of the five victims rushed to local hospitals, only one has been verified as a student at the historically Black university. Investigators believe the remaining victims may hail from surrounding communities. Medical updates indicate that one person was initially listed with life-threatening injuries and has since been upgraded to critical condition, while the other four sustained non-life-threatening wounds.
Federal and local agencies stepped in to assist the ongoing probe. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office joined Chesterfield police and campus officers to process the area.

The shooting struck right as the campus was welcoming students back for the academic year. Residence halls had opened a week prior, and incoming freshmen had just finished wrapping up orientation events like the "New Trojans Experience". Classes are scheduled to resume on Monday, leaving faculty, students, and local residents grappling with a tragic start to the term.
