They are looking at the spreadsheet backward.
TSMC is not being coerced into a margin-crushing trap. They are using Washington’s geopolitical anxiety to institutionalize an unbreakable pricing monopoly, subsidize their own geographic expansion, and force hyperscalers like Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft to foot the entire bill.

The Real Economics of the Arizona Fabs
Let's kill the biggest myth right away: the idea that higher American labor costs will wreck TSMC’s operational efficiency.
In advanced semiconductor manufacturing, direct labor accounts for roughly 5% to 10% of total wafer cost. Silicon fabrication is not garment stitching. It is an automated, capital-intensive dance of Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, precise chemical deposition, and extreme cleanroom robotics.
When an EUV machine from ASML runs north of $180 million per unit, your cost driver is not the technician holding a clipboard. Your cost driver is equipment depreciation and yield rates.

TSMC doesn't lose sleep over paying an engineer in Arizona twice what they pay an engineer in Taiwan. They lose sleep when a multi-billion-dollar chamber sits idle for ten minutes.
By securing tens of billions in CHIPS Act subsidies, tax credits, and local infrastructure commitments, TSMC offset a vast portion of their initial capital expenditure. They took free government money to build redundant capacity, reducing their own structural capex risk while ensuring their yield advantages remain unmatched globally.
The Hostage Buyer Dynamic
What the tech press routinely misses is basic pricing power.
Who else is going to print 3-nanometer or 2-nanometer wafers at scale for cutting-edge AI systems? Intel’s foundry division is still struggling through a multi-year turnaround attempt, bleeding cash while trying to win back market trust. Samsung’s yield issues on advanced nodes have been well-documented for years.
If you are designing top-tier AI hardware, TSMC is not a choice. TSMC is the only choice.
When Washington demands that advanced AI chips be manufactured inside U.S. borders, it creates a supply-constrained environment. TSMC does not absorb the 30% to 40% cost premium of domestic fabrication. They mark it up, tag it as "geopolitical insurance," and pass the invoice straight to their customers.

The ultimate irony of American chip protectionism is that it actually guarantees TSMC’s supremacy rather than weakening it.
Building a modern fab requires an entire ecosystem: chemical suppliers, ultra-pure water filters, specialized gas vendors, optics mechanics, and silicon wafer distributors. In Taiwan, this cluster exists within a two-hour drive along the high-speed rail line. In the U.S., it has to be built from scratch.
Smaller prospective foundry competitors cannot sustain the capital burn required to create a supply chain from nothing in North America. TSMC can. Because TSMC commands over 60% of total foundry market share and over 90% of advanced nodes, they possess the sheer scale needed to drag their Taiwanese supply chain partners across the Pacific with them.

TSMC isn't being isolated in a foreign market. They are exporting their impenetrable Taiwan supply chain cluster directly into the American Southwest, paid for by U.S. taxpayers and tech giants. Once that infrastructure is fully operational, no domestic startup or struggling legacy player will ever match their economies of scale on U.S. soil.
The Catch Nobody Wants to Talk About
Is this strategy entirely risk-free for TSMC? Of course not.
Workplace culture integration remains a real friction point. Managing American labor dynamics requires a completely different playbook than running operations in Hsinchu, where round-the-clock shift rotations and intense operational hierarchy are standard practice.
Operational drag from culture clash is real. It slows down ramp-up speeds. It pushes back commercial production timelines.
But operational friction is a temporary logistics problem, not a structural business flaw. Yield rates will stabilize. Management practices will adapt. Once those fabs are humming, TSMC holds the ultimate geopolitical hedge:
- If cross-strait tension escalates, their U.S. fabs guarantee high-margin cash flow that keeps the business solvent.
- If stability remains intact, their Taiwanese core continues to operate as the world's cheapest, highest-yielding silicon engine.
They built a system where they win in peace and dominate in crisis.
The Delusion of Cheap AI Hardware
Stop waiting for the cost of training state-of-the-art AI models to drop because of "manufacturing competition." There is no competition at the leading edge.
Every policy designed to force supply chains into secure jurisdictions simply adds layer upon layer of regulatory, physical, and operational compliance overhead.
TSMC will not take a haircut on margins to accommodate Western political goals. They will continue to print the world's most critical asset, bill the world's richest corporations for the privilege, and maintain gross margins that make software companies green with envy.
