Consider the opportunity cost. Let us address the most common defense of these missions. People argue that space telescopes drive technological spinoffs, pointing to consumer electronics and medical imaging sensors derived from aerospace research. This is the broken window fallacy dressed up in a lab coat. If you hand engineers ten billion dollars and tell them to solve a hard problem, they will invent things. They would invent things just as fast if that money were funneled directly into high-temperature superconductivity, grid-scale energy storage, or advanced desalinization. The truth is that Big Astronomy has become an institutional religion. It relies on faith, spectacle, and emotional manipulation to secure funding without accountability for schedule overruns or budget explosions. When a commercial enterprise misses a launch window by five years and doubles its budget, heads roll. When a space telescope program does it, Congress just holds another hearing to praise the resilience of the science team.

Stop treating distant starlight as a substitute for actual progress. The universe is not going anywhere. It can wait while we learn how to manage our own planet and build more efficient, distributed ways of observing the cosmos without bankrupting taxpayers for a few pretty pictures.

Cancel the next flagship orbiter. Scale the arrays on the ground. Build smarter, not bigger.
