Crime plots usually sound clever on paper. Executing them under high-definition CCTV in one of the most surveillance-heavy countries on the planet is a completely different story.

On June 19, 2026, two Indian nationals stepped into the Dianoche jewellery boutique along Kreta Ayer Road in Singapore's Chinatown. They weren't there to browse. They had a plan to steal a 4.95-carat loose diamond valued at nearly $200,000 (roughly Rs 1.49 crore).

The execution was surprisingly low-tech. 41-year-old Mangroliya Manojkumar Kurjibhai played the role of a high-value buyer. He kept the sales manager busy by repeatedly asking to inspect various pieces of high-end jewellery scattered around the showroom. Each time the manager turned away to fetch another tray, it gave 30-year-old accomplice Serasiya Milan Ramnikbhai a window of opportunity.

Serasiya was carrying a custom-made fake gem inside his mouth. When the manager's back was turned, he spat out the fake, grabbed the 4.95-carat natural diamond off the counter, swapped the stones, and popped the real gem straight into his mouth.

They didn't run. They politely told the staff they needed to think about the purchase, walked out the front door, and returned to their hotel room to pack.

What makes this case stand out isn't just the oral swap trick—it's the preparation. This wasn't a sudden urge to snatch a shiny object. State Prosecuting Officer Yip Cheng Yee revealed in court that the pair traveled to Singapore on social visit passes specifically to pull off this heist.

Prior to flying out, they had a replica diamond manufactured in Surat, India—the world's premier diamond cutting and polishing hub.

This replica wasn't a generic piece of cheap glass. It was custom-crafted to mirror the target stone's exact dimensions, carat weight, cut profile, and even its laser-inscribed serial number. Court records haven't revealed how they got their hands on the original diamond's grading report or serial data before setting foot in Singapore. But someone clearly did homework beforehand.

Having precise serial numbers on synthetic glass or zirconia can fool a quick visual check under basic store lighting. That gave them enough time to clear the shop floor without immediately raising alarms.

Why the Plan Crumbled in Under Six Hours

If you're going to commit major theft in Singapore, your exit strategy needs to be flawless. Theirs wasn't.

Shortly after the pair left Dianoche, the store manager ran a routine check on the left-behind stone using an optical gemstone identification device. The machine instantly flagged the stone as a fake.

The timeline collapsed rapidly after that:

  • 3:00 PM: The pair enters the Chinatown shop and conducts the swap.
  • 3:20 PM: The store manager tests the stone, discovers the fake, and pulls CCTV footage.
  • 4:00 PM: Singapore Police Force gets the report, runs facial recognition against border security records, and identifies the suspects.
  • 5:00 PM: The suspects check out of their hotel early and head for the airport.
  • 8:50 PM: Officers intercept both men at Changi Airport Terminal 3 while they wait to clear immigration for a flight back to India.

When police searched their belongings at immigration, they found the real 4.95-carat diamond stashed inside Serasiya's backpack—he had finally taken it out of his mouth.

Singapore's border integration makes quick getaways almost impossible. Between automated immigration gates, high-definition camera coverage across the city, and rapid cross-agency data sharing, six hours is plenty of time for law enforcement to freeze your departure.

Singapore takes property crimes extremely seriously, especially when foreign visitors treat the country as a target for organized theft. Under Section 380 of the Penal Code, theft in any building used as a human dwelling or for the custody of property carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison alongside monetary fines.

Mangroliya Manojkumar Kurjibhai pleaded guilty to one count of theft and was sentenced to two years, two months, and two weeks in prison.

During sentencing, the prosecution stressed the premeditated nature of the crime, pointing out that purchasing tickets and manufacturing a custom clone in another country demonstrated clear criminal intent. In mitigation, Mangroliya asked for leniency through an interpreter, citing his obligation to support his two children back home in India. The court, however, emphasized deterrence for planned international criminal activity.

Serasiya's case remains pending in court as proceedings continue.

What Retailers Can Learn About Gemstone Security

High-end jewellers often focus heavily on vault security, armed transport, and door access control. Yet, as this case shows, the most vulnerable point in retail security is the physical presentation counter.

If you handle high-value inventory, standard operating procedures must account for distraction tactics:

  • Strict One-Item Policies: Never permit sales staff to present multiple loose diamonds or high-carat pieces simultaneously. One item comes out of the safe; that item goes back before another is shown.
  • Mandatory Thermal and Optical Testing: Test stones right in front of the customer before they walk out, especially when a deal isn't closed. It removes any ambiguity about when a swap took place.
  • Dual-Staff Protocols: For loose stones over a certain dollar threshold, require two staff members on the floor—one to handle the customer and another to observe the counter handling.
  • Sub-Surface Laser Marking Verification: Always use a loupe or digital microscope to verify the specific laser inscription code on the girdle before returning a stone to storage.
