Aggressive data retention policies are the hallmark of a confident company. If you know what your business drivers are, you don't need to keep the "just in case" junk. You keep the gold and melt down the rest.
We have spent a decade celebrating the "collectors." It is time to start celebrating the "editors." The next generation of winning companies won't be the ones with the most data; they will be the ones with the clearest view of the smallest amount of data necessary to win.
The era of big data is over. The era of intentional data is here. If you can't describe your entire business strategy on a single index card without referencing a "proprietary algorithm," you aren't data-driven. You're just lost.
Burn the dashboards. Fire the consultants who talk about "synergy" and "holistic views." Find the three numbers that actually move your profit margin and ignore everything else.
